Prisoner Ombudsman publishes investigation report

Published on April 02 2020

The Prisoner Ombudsman for Northern Ireland has today published the findings of an investigation into the death of Mr R.

Mr R died from natural causes shortly after he was discharged from Magilligan prison on compassionate grounds.

The Ombudsman was satisfied that Mr R received good clinical care. She made four recommendations to enhance the care provided to terminally ill prisoners and these were accepted by the Prison Service and the Trust.

The Prisoner Ombudsman, Dr Lesley Carroll, said she particularly wanted to highlight the need for the Prison Service to communicate effectively with families during the course of an illness in recognition of the important contribution they can make to care planning.
